Liver stem cell transplantation: future dream for children and dogs with hereditary diseases
As a pediatrician at the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital in Utrecht, Sabine Fuchs sees many children with metabolic disorders. The liver does not function adequately in most of them. However, a liver transplant is not an option for many of these children. Together with veterinarian and scientist Hedwig Kruitwagen of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Fuchs tries to improve the medical possibilities for liver patients. As part of their research, the two performed a liver stem cell transplantation in six dogs who suffered from “copper accumulation” in the liver. Two researchers on their shared dream of helping dogs and people with liver disorders.
