Stem Cell & Organoid Biology
We’re finding new ways to overcome the shortage of organ donors.
Read about Bart Spee’s research.
The shortage of donors for liver transplants is a growing problem, in Europe alone, 22% of patients on the waiting list for a liver transplant die.
Alternatives are needed to treat the increasing number of patients with liver diseases. We’re investigating the use of stem cells, ranging from adult stem cells (organoids) to mesenchymal stem cells for functional recovery of liverprove the efficacy and safety of these stem cell therapies, my group uses a unique large animal model, the dog, to bridge fundamental science to human clinics. In addition, the differentiation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells into hepatocytes or the generation of direct reprogrammed induced hepatocytes (iHEP cells) from patient material have great potential in toxicology and/or personalised medicine.
